often ask me how they can improve their English. \u201cI\u2019m stuck!\u201d they say. \u201cMy progress was so fast before, but I\u2019m not improving any more.\u201d They\u2019re not always completely right about that \u2013&nbsp;a lot of my students are much better at English than they think they are! \u2013 but it\u2019s true that progress can feel slower after you pass <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globallyspeaking.it\/gs\/chi-siamo\/i-nostri-livelli-cefr\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B1 level in English<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I help my students find strategies that will help them keep improving during the week, not just in class with me. I often begin with sharing some of the things that helped me go from an intermediate level (B1) to advanced (C1) in Italian:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b4c0933 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"b4c0933\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8779e7e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"8779e7e\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2bd7b34 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"2bd7b34\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-60273df elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"60273df\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Find time\u2026even when you don\u2019t have time!<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about how long it took you to master your first language: all that patient encouragement from your parents and grandparents, followed by years of school. We don\u2019t have that luxury when we\u2019re learning a second language, but we do have to dedicate time to it. This doesn\u2019t mean spending your whole weekend studying \u2013 even in a busy schedule, there will be moments during the day (on public transport, at the post office) when you can do things like reading or listening to a podcast in English. If you keep using those moments, that adds up to a good amount of time for English in your week.<\/span><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Make English part of your everyday life<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you enjoy doing? If you like cooking, try using recipes written in English. If it\u2019s football you love, watch replays in English. If there\u2019s a book you\u2019d love to read again, find an English translation and take it to the beach this summer\u2026 So many of the things that you do every day \u2013\u00a0like watching the news or listening to music \u2013 can easily be done in English.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Find ways to write and speak English outside your English lessons<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forget exam tasks and start writing a diary in English \u2013\u00a0get into the habit of writing just a line or two a day, and that will lead to steady improvement over time. But how do you speak without a teacher or classmates to talk to? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ted.com\/how-to-learn-a-new-language-7-secrets-from-ted-translators\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like one translator of TED talks suggests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you could try live-narrating parts of your day to an imaginary foreign friend!<\/span><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Make real friends in English<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting to know someone in another language is one of the best ways to speed up your improvement in that language. I used a website called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conversationexchange.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversation Exchange<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find language partners (people who spoke English at the same level as my Italian). We started by meeting online or in person to talk for 30 minutes in English and 30 minutes in Italian, but we quickly became good friends. Another way to make friends in English is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globallyspeaking.it\/gs\/corso-di-inglese-a-roma\/corso-di-inglese-per-adulti-a-roma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">join a group class<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Using English to chat to classmates can seem strange at first, but\u00a0you can form friendships that continue after the course ends and keep practising your English together (as some of my Globally Speaking students do!).\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Find strategies that work for you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those ideas worked for me, but the most successful strategies are the ones that make sense for you.
