Should you watch shows with or without subtitles to learn English?

by Sarah

Learning English through TV shows, movies, and online series has become one of the most enjoyable and effective ways to practice the language. The big question many learners face is: should you watch with subtitles or without them? The answer depends on your level, goals, and how you balance comprehension with challenge.

When and how to use subtitles

If you’re a beginner or lower-intermediate learner, subtitles are your best friend. They help you follow the story, connect the sounds to the words, and pick up new vocabulary without getting lost. Just make sure you’re using English subtitles, not Italian ones. If you’re reading in Italian, your brain takes the easy way out and stops listening properly.

Get better at understanding accents

And here’s something students often overlook: subtitles are brilliant for dealing with accents. English is full of them! A Londoner doesn’t sound like a New Yorker, and an Irish accent can feel miles away from an Australian one. At first, the variety can be overwhelming – but subtitles give you that safety net. With time, your ear adapts, and you’ll get much better at understanding global English.

When to stop using subtitles

Once you’re more confident, though, it’s time to be brave. Try watching with subtitles first, then re-watch without them. Yes, you’ll probably miss a few lines at the start. But that challenge is exactly what helps your listening improve. Think of it as ear training – like going to the gym, but for your English.

Here at Globally Speaking in Rome, I always tell my students: treat Netflix like an extra English lesson. Choose a series you actually enjoy, watch it regularly, and notice how much easier it gets week by week.

So – subtitles or no subtitles? The magic is in the mix. Use them to build confidence, then gradually let them go. Soon enough, you’ll find yourself laughing at the jokes, catching the accents, and enjoying the show just like a native speaker.
